Do you remember Title 9? I only just heard of it a couple years ago. It is the government's way of ensuring woman had equal opportunities in sports and ultimately college in beginning in the 70's. Well, that's probably not completely correct but, for the sake of this blog let's just go with that. (And yes, Title 9 is also a really cool woman's sport clothing company whose clothes I wish I could wear but I'm not athletic enough and a bit too bumpy to actually wear.)
When I was growing up, we had a lot of softball opportunities. Except for the post game beer drinking, I really hate softball. Most players hated to ride the bench. I fervently hoped to sit there through all 9 innings. Usually I'd get sent out to right field where I fervently hoped I wouldn't have to field a ball and then have to demonstrate my throw-like-a-girl skills. I played the summer after high school because my (in hindsight, probably gay) friend, Kathy, asked me to. But I didn't have anything better to do on Monday nights plus, there was the post-game beer.
So I find myself surprised that I am actively involved in athletics today. Well, to be honest, I'm really still just riding the bench. But now it's either a bleacher or the drivers seat in my minivan. I drive, make travel arrangements, pay fees, fill out forms, make sports related decisions and love with all my heart and soul watching my children play their sports. There is still that post game beer, though I'm so sophisticated now I usually order Chardonnay.
